Sweet Crystal Spice

Emily P. Contributor

Sugar is a sweet name, literally! It's perfect for a dog with a sweet disposition or a coat as white as granulated sugar. It's a nod to the Sugar Pops cereal mascot, Sugar Bear, who was always cool and laid back. Plus, it's a classic name from the 60s, when Sugar & Spice was a hit song. Etymologically, 'sugar' comes from Sanskrit 'sharkara' meaning 'gravel' or 'sand', which is fitting for a dog who loves to dig. So, if you're looking for a name that's sweet, cool, and a little bit gritty, Sugar is a great choice!

We adopted a red heeler named Sugar a little after Halloween. She already had that name, meaning we didn't pick it out, but it suits her fur color and patterns very well. She has a unique marking on her head, which is a white diamond. This name is adorable for female dogs. OUR Sugar is huge, but I think this name works best with smaller dogs.

My husband was set on "Sugar" for our tiny, black and tan Cavalier mix. I think it sounds like a horse's name, but she is now known as Sugar Bear, Sugar Rae, Sugar Dog and of course, we constantly sing, Sugar pie honey bunch, you know that I love you...
